Carat weight is the single most common source of buyer's remorse in moissanite jewelry. A stone that looks perfect in a product photo can feel too small in real life — or too big to wear comfortably to the office. Here's a quick framework to get it right the first time.
What carat actually means
Carat is a measure of weight, not size. For moissanite (which is slightly lighter than diamond), a 1-carat stone typically measures around 6.5mm in diameter for a round brilliant cut. Below is the rough sizing guide for round moissanite:
- 0.5 carat — about 5mm — delicate, refined
- 1 carat — about 6.5mm — the classic everyday size
- 2 carat — about 8mm — noticeable, still wearable daily
- 3 carat — about 9.5mm — statement size, reads luxurious
How to choose for studs
0.5ct sits flush against the earlobe — reads polished and minimal, ideal for layered ear stacks or first-piercing comfort. 1ct is the classic "diamond stud" look, visible from across the room but never overwhelming. 2ct and above make a statement — they catch light dramatically and are best for occasions where you want the jewelry to be part of the outfit, not part of the background.
How to choose for rings
